Understanding States of Consciousness
Neville Goddard's teachings center around the profound understanding that consciousness is the only reality, and that by changing our state of consciousness, we can change our external world. In this lesson, we'll explore the fundamental concept of states of consciousness and how they directly impact our manifestation abilities.
What Are States of Consciousness?
A state of consciousness is simply a collection of thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and assumptions that you hold about yourself and your world at any given moment. Think of it as a mental and emotional "outfit" that you wear. Just as you can change your physical clothes, you can change your state of consciousness.
Neville taught that everything in your external world is a reflection of your internal state. When you change your state of consciousness, your external circumstances must follow suit. This is not wishful thinking—it's a fundamental law of creation.
The Nature of States
States of consciousness are:
Temporary and Changeable
No state is permanent. You can move from a state of lack to abundance, from sadness to joy, from confusion to clarity. The key is recognizing that you have this power of choice.
Self-Reinforcing
Whatever state you occupy tends to perpetuate itself. If you're in a state of worry, you'll find more things to worry about. If you're in a state of gratitude, you'll find more reasons to be grateful.
Creative
Every state is constantly creating experiences that match its nature. Your current state is literally broadcasting a signal that attracts corresponding circumstances.
Common States and Their Manifestations
State of Lack
- Characteristics: Feeling "not enough," focusing on what's missing
- Manifestations: Financial struggles, relationship problems, health issues
- Internal dialogue: "I can't afford this," "Nothing ever works out for me"
State of Abundance
- Characteristics: Feeling complete and fulfilled, gratitude for what is
- Manifestations: Opportunities, wealth, loving relationships
- Internal dialogue: "I have everything I need," "Life supports me"
State of Love
- Characteristics: Compassion, acceptance, unity with others
- Manifestations: Harmonious relationships, kindness from strangers
- Internal dialogue: "I am loved," "Everyone is doing their best"
How to Work with States
1. Recognition
The first step is becoming aware of your current state. Ask yourself:
- How am I feeling right now?
- What thoughts are dominating my mind?
- What assumptions am I making about myself and my circumstances?
2. Choice
Once you recognize your current state, you can choose to change it. Remember, states are not imposed upon you—you have the power to select which state you occupy.
3. Assumption
To enter a new state, you must assume the feeling of already being in that state. If you want to manifest abundance, you must assume the feeling of being abundant now, not tomorrow or next week.
4. Persistence
States require cultivation. Just as a muscle grows stronger with exercise, your desired state becomes more natural the more you practice occupying it.
Practical Application
Imagine you want to manifest a new job. Instead of focusing on your current unemployment (state of lack), you would:
- Recognize that you're in a state of unemployment/lack
- Choose to enter the state of being successfully employed
- Assume the feeling of having your ideal job—feel the satisfaction, security, and joy
- Persist in this assumption despite current circumstances
Remember, your mind doesn't know the difference between a vividly imagined experience and a real one. When you consistently occupy the state of having your desire, your external world will conform to match this internal reality.
The Power of Assumption
Neville emphasized that assumption is the key to changing states. When you assume something to be true and feel it as real, you've entered that state of consciousness. The external world has no choice but to reflect this internal change.
This is why Neville often said, "Assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled." The feeling is the secret—it's what indicates which state you're occupying and therefore what you're creating in your experience.

Practice
Identify your current dominant state of consciousness regarding one area of your life (relationships, career, health, or finances). Write a 150-word description that includes: (1) The characteristics of this state (thoughts, feelings, assumptions), (2) How this state might be manifesting in your external experience, and (3) One specific way you could begin shifting to a more desired state.
💡 Be honest about your current state without judgment. Remember that recognition is the first step to transformation.
According to Neville Goddard's teachings, what is the most important element for changing from one state of consciousness to another? A) Positive thinking, B) Taking action, C) Assumption and feeling, D) Visualization techniques
💡 Think about what Neville called 'the secret' and what he meant by 'assume the feeling of your wish fulfilled.'
Practice entering a desired state: Choose something you want to manifest and spend 5 minutes assuming the feeling of already having it. Write a brief reflection (100 words) describing: What state you chose to enter, what it felt like to assume having your desire, and any resistance or ease you experienced during the practice.
💡 Focus on the feeling rather than the mental images. The emotional tone and sense of fulfillment is what matters most.
