Talking About the Past: Passato Prossimo
Introduction
The passato prossimo is one of the most important past tenses in Italian, used to express completed actions in the past. Unlike Spanish, which primarily uses "haber" as an auxiliary verb, Italian uses two different auxiliary verbs: essere (to be) and avere (to have). Understanding when to use each auxiliary is crucial for mastering this tense.
Structure of Passato Prossimo
The passato prossimo is a compound tense formed by: Auxiliary verb (essere/avere) + Past Participle
Formation of Past Participles
Regular past participles follow these patterns:
- -are verbs: parlare → parlato (spoken)
- -ere verbs: vendere → venduto (sold)
- -ire verbs: finire → finito (finished)
Using AVERE as Auxiliary
Most Italian verbs use avere as their auxiliary. These typically include:
- Transitive verbs (verbs that take a direct object)
- Verbs expressing actions directed outward
Examples with Avere:
Io ho mangiato la pizza. (I ate the pizza.)
Tu hai comprato una macchina. (You bought a car.)
Lei ha studiato italiano. (She studied Italian.)
Noi abbiamo visto il film. (We saw the movie.)
Using ESSERE as Auxiliary
Essere is used with:
- Intransitive verbs (no direct object)
- Verbs of movement: andare, venire, arrivare, partire
- Verbs of state/change: nascere, morire, diventare, rimanere
- Reflexive verbs: alzarsi, vestirsi, chiamarsi
Important: With essere, the past participle must agree with the subject in gender and number!
Examples with Essere:
Io sono andato/a al mercato. (I went to the market.)
Maria è arrivata ieri. (Maria arrived yesterday.)
I bambini sono nati in Italia. (The children were born in Italy.)
Le ragazze si sono alzate presto. (The girls got up early.)
Agreement Rules
With Essere:
- Masculine singular: -o (andato)
- Feminine singular: -a (andata)
- Masculine plural: -i (andati)
- Feminine plural: -e (andate)
With Avere:
- Generally no agreement
- Exception: when direct object pronouns (lo, la, li, le) precede the verb
Ho visto Maria. (I saw Maria.) - no agreement
L'ho vista. (I saw her.) - agreement with "la"
Common Irregular Past Participles
Many important verbs have irregular past participles:
- essere → stato (been)
- fare → fatto (done/made)
- dire → detto (said)
- scrivere → scritto (written)
- leggere → letto (read)
- prendere → preso (taken)
- vedere → visto (seen)
- aprire → aperto (opened)
Time Expressions with Passato Prossimo
Common time expressions used with passato prossimo:
- ieri (yesterday)
- la settimana scorsa (last week)
- due ore fa (two hours ago)
- già (already)
- ancora non (not yet)

Practice
Choose the correct auxiliary verb (essere or avere) for each sentence: 1) Maria ___ andata al cinema. 2) Noi ___ mangiato la pizza. 3) I bambini ___ nati in Italia. 4) Tu ___ comprato una macchina.
💡 Remember: essere is used with movement verbs, state changes, and reflexive verbs. Avere is used with most transitive verbs.
Write 5 sentences in passato prossimo describing what you did yesterday. Use at least 2 sentences with essere and 2 with avere. Make sure to apply proper agreement rules.
💡 Think about daily activities like waking up (alzarsi - essere), eating (mangiare - avere), going places (andare - essere), or watching something (guardare - avere).
Complete these sentences with the correct form of passato prossimo, including proper agreement: 1) Le ragazze (arrivare) _____ tardi. 2) Marco (vedere) _____ il film ieri. 3) Voi (divertirsi) _____ alla festa? 4) Io (fare) _____ i compiti.
💡 Pay attention to the subject's gender and number when using essere, and remember the irregular past participle for 'fare'.
