Essential Vocabulary and Descriptions

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to use essential Italian vocabulary for family, food, and colors while correctly applying adjective agreement rules.

Essential Vocabulary

Family (La Famiglia)

Let's start with basic family terms that you'll use frequently in Italian conversations:

Immediate Family:

  • padre (PAH-dreh) - father
  • madre (MAH-dreh) - mother
  • figlio (FEE-lyoh) - son
  • figlia (FEE-lyah) - daughter

  • sorella (soh-REL-lah) - sister
  • marito (mah-REE-toh) - husband
  • moglie (MOH-lyeh) - wife

  • zio (TSEE-oh) - uncle
  • zia (TSEE-ah) - aunt
  • cugino/cugina (koo-JEE-noh/koo-JEE-nah) - cousin (m/f)

Food (Il Cibo)

Italian cuisine is world-renowned, so learning food vocabulary is essential:

  • pane (PAH-neh) - bread
  • pasta (PAH-stah) - pasta
  • riso (REE-soh) - rice
  • carne (KAR-neh) - meat

  • ravioli (rah-vee-OH-lee)

Colors (I Colori)

Colors are adjectives in Italian, which means they must agree with the nouns they describe:

Basic Colors:

  • rosso/rossa (ROHS-soh/ROHS-sah) - red (m/f)
  • blu (bloo) - blue (invariable)
  • verde (VER-deh) - green (same for m/f)
  • giallo/gialla (JAHL-loh/JAHL-lah) - yellow (m/f)
  • nero/nera (NEH-roh/NEH-rah) - black (m/f)
  • bianco/bianca (bee-AHN-koh/bee-AHN-kah) - white (m/f)
  • marrone (mar-ROH-neh) - brown (invariable)
  • viola (vee-OH-lah) - purple (invariable)

Adjective Agreement Rules

In Italian, adjectives must "agree" with the nouns they describe in both gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural). This is one of the most important grammar concepts for beginners.

Basic Agreement Pattern

Masculine Singular: ends in -o

  • il gatto nero (the black cat)

Feminine Singular: ends in -a

  • la macchina rossa (the red car)

Masculine Plural: ends in -i

  • i gatti neri (the black cats)

Feminine Plural: ends in -e

  • le macchine rosse (the red cars)

Special Cases

  1. Adjectives ending in -e (like verde) have the same form for masculine and feminine singular:

    • il libro verde (the green book - masculine)
    • la mela verde (the green apple - feminine)
    • Plural: verdi for both genders
  2. Invariable adjectives (like blu, viola, marrone) never change:

    • il vestito blu (the blue dress)
    • la gonna blu (the blue skirt)
    • i vestiti blu (the blue dresses)

Practical Examples with Family and Food

Family Descriptions:

  • Mia sorella è alta (My sister is tall)
  • I miei fratelli sono simpatici (My brothers are nice)
  • Le mie cugine sono giovani (My cousins are young)

Food Descriptions:

  • La pasta è buona (The pasta is good)
  • I pomodori sono rossi (The tomatoes are red)
  • Le mele verdi sono acide (The green apples are sour)

Practice Tip

When learning new vocabulary, always learn nouns with their articles (il, la, i, le) to help you remember their gender. This will make adjective agreement much easier!

Practice

1

Choose the correct form of the adjective 'rosso' (red) to complete this sentence: 'La mela è _____.' A) rosso B) rossa C) rossi D) rosse

💡 Remember that 'mela' (apple) is feminine singular, so the adjective must agree.

2

Write three complete Italian sentences describing family members using colors. Include one masculine singular, one feminine singular, and one plural example. Use the vocabulary from this lesson.

💡 Remember to make the color adjectives agree with the gender and number of the family member you're describing.

3

Which of these adjectives is invariable (never changes form)? A) rosso B) verde C) blu D) bianco

💡 Look for the adjective that stays the same whether describing masculine, feminine, singular, or plural nouns.
