Future Plans and Hypothetical Situations

Learning Objective

Express future plans using future tense and discuss hypothetical situations with the conditional mood.

The Future Tense (Il Futuro)

The future tense in Italian is used to express actions that will happen in the future, make predictions, and express probability about present situations.

Formation

For regular verbs, drop the infinitive ending and add these endings:

-ARE verbs (parlare → parler-)

  • io parlerò (I will speak)
  • tu parlerai (you will speak)
  • lui/lei parlerà (he/she will speak)
  • noi parleremo (we will speak)
  • voi parlerete (you all will speak)
  • loro parleranno (they will speak)

-ERE verbs (vendere → vender-)

  • io venderò
  • tu venderai
  • lui/lei venderà
  • noi venderemo
  • voi venderete
  • loro venderanno

-IRE verbs (partire → partir-)

  • io partirò
  • tu partirai
  • lui/lei partirà
  • noi partiremo
  • voi partirete
  • loro partiranno

Common Irregular Future Verbs

essere → sarò, sarai, sarà, saremo, sarete, saranno
avere → avrò, avrai, avrà, avremo, avrete, avranno
fare → farò, farai, farà, faremo, farete, faranno
andare → andrò, andrai, andrà, andremo, andrete, andranno
venire → verrò, verrai, verrà, verremo, verrete, verranno
volere → vorrò, vorrai, vorrà, vorremo, vorrete, vorranno
potere → potrò, potrai, potrà, potremo, potrete, potranno
dovere → dovrò, dovrai, dovrà, dovremo, dovrete, dovranno

Examples of Future Plans

  • Domani andrò al cinema con Maria. (Tomorrow I will go to the movies with Maria.)
  • La prossima estate visiteremo la Toscana. (Next summer we will visit Tuscany.)
  • Fra due anni mi laureerò in medicina. (In two years I will graduate in medicine.)

The Conditional Mood (Il Condizionale)

The conditional mood expresses hypothetical situations, polite requests, and what would happen under certain conditions.

Present Conditional Formation

Use the same stem as the future tense, but with different endings:

All verbs:

  • io -ei
  • tu -esti
  • lui/lei -ebbe
  • noi -emmo
  • voi -este
  • loro -ebbero

Examples:

  • parlare → parlerei, parleresti, parlerebbe, parleremmo, parlereste, parlerebbero
  • essere → sarei, saresti, sarebbe, saremmo, sareste, sarebbero
  • avere → avrei, avresti, avrebbe, avremmo, avreste, avrebbero

Uses of the Conditional

1. Polite Requests

  • Potresti aiutarmi? (Could you help me?)
  • Vorrei un caffè, per favore. (I would like a coffee, please.)

2. Hypothetical Situations

  • Se avessi tempo, viaggerei di più. (If I had time, I would travel more.)
  • Con più soldi, comprerei una casa al mare. (With more money, I would buy a house by the sea.)

3. Expressing Wishes or Dreams

  • Mi piacerebbe vivere in Italia. (I would like to live in Italy.)
  • Vorremmo aprire un ristorante. (We would like to open a restaurant.)

Combining Future and Conditional

Future of Probability

The future tense can express probability about present situations:

  • Dove sarà Marco? (Where could Marco be?)
  • Avrà circa trent'anni. (He's probably about thirty years old.)

Conditional in Hypothetical Sentences

Use the conditional in the main clause of hypothetical sentences:

  • Se studiassi di più, avresti voti migliori. (If you studied more, you would have better grades.)
  • Se fossi ricco, farei il giro del mondo. (If I were rich, I would travel around the world.)

Advanced Expressions

  • Chissà se... (Who knows if...)
  • Magari! (If only! / I wish!)
  • Nel caso in cui... (In case...)
  • Supponiamo che... (Let's suppose that...)

Practice Scenarios

Try expressing these situations:

  1. Your vacation plans for next summer
  2. What you would do if you won the lottery
  3. A polite request to borrow something
  4. Your career goals for the next five years

Practice

1

Write 5 sentences about your future plans using the future tense. Include at least 2 irregular verbs (essere, avere, fare, andare, venire, volere, potere, dovere).

💡 Think about plans for tomorrow, next week, next year, or long-term goals. Remember that irregular verbs have special stems in the future tense.

2

Choose the correct conditional form: 'Se avessi più tempo, (studiare) _______ l'italiano ogni giorno.' A) studierò B) studierei C) studio D) studierà

💡 The conditional is used in hypothetical situations. Look for the -ei ending for 'io' form.

3

Create a dialogue between two friends discussing a hypothetical situation: 'What would you do if you could live anywhere in Italy?' Use at least 4 conditional verbs and include polite expressions.

💡 Use 'Se potessi vivere ovunque in Italia...' to start. Include conditional forms like vorrei, sarebbe, farei, and vivrei.
